What’s on deck today? A fun post about me inspired by Ashley’s post over at A Lady Goes West (check her out if you like healthy living blogs and a glimpse into California living!).
Want some insight into the person behind the blog? Well, today you’re getting it. I have no problem admitting all the things I’m really bad at. And this is just the short list! I’m working on these things I swear, and if you ask Tom, I think I’ve improved on a few of these points as of late. Maybe not. I actually asked Tom if he could help me with this post and bless his heart, he agreed with the first point below, but said he didn’t know and couldn’t come up with much else. He’s amazingly good at lying and guess he’s learned a lot after 4 years of marriage! 😉 So… let’s get on with it. Admitting I have some weak points is the first step at addressing them and improving, right? What’s something you are really terrible at?
Things I’m really bad at
If you know me in real life, you can attest to at least one point on the following list. To publicly shame myself, I’m presenting you with a list of things I realllllllly suck at. So enjoy this one. 😉
Keeping house clutter to a minimum.
Folding clothes.
Taking no for an answer.
Staying up late.
If it’s midnight and I’m still awake, one of three things is going on and none of them are good: 1) I’m sick or Dagny is sick. 2) I’m jetlagged 3) Crisis at work. None of those things? Then I’m in bed and asleep by 11 max. Often 10:30. There are exceptions like if we’re traveling or visiting family and there’s a party or concert or something else.
But my everyday life? You’ll find me snoring at a toddler’s bedtime. I know that I’m a granny. If Tom and I start a movie at 9:30 pm, unless it’s the best movie ever, I pass out on the couch halfway through (much to his dismay, but hey he doesn’t get up ’til after 9 on the weekends when I’ve been up for hours). I’m not a night owl and am perfectly happy to wake up early and get my day started shortly after sunrise. Or this time of year, before since sunrise is after 8am where I am. Yikes!
Handyman stuff around the house.
Knowing street names in my town.
Meal planning
In the evening when Tom gets home from work, I’m smack in the middle of my own work and can’t focus on prepping a meal. I’d love to use my slow cooker once a week and whip up something awesome on Sunday that I can save and heat up as leftovers. And sometimes we do this but it’s not consistent. I know what I need to do and what I should do but for some reason I just can’t consistently get there!
Conjugating French verbs automatically. In weird tenses.

Please chime in and let me know if you can relate to anything and tell me, what’s something you are really terrible at? We’re all friends here.

Brave of you to admit all of this but I have a solution for some of your woes: move! We’re in that process now knowing that we’ll take very little to France. With the closets bare, there’s almost nothing to fold. Since the house is for sale, and we have to keep it looking neat at all times, we have a genuine incentive to be clutter-free.
As far as not taking “no” for an answer, from what we understand that can come in very handy there. Just because one government employee or sales associate gives you a negative reply you find someone else who agrees with you. Has that been your experience?
You are SO right about letting the native French speaker finish your sentences. They seem delighted (shocked?) that as an American you are even attempting their language and have always seemed happy to complete my thoughts.
Diane says
Hahhaha, excellent advice, Bob. But not practical for me because I’d just clutter up the new place in a matter of days.
Fonctionnaires in France are usually willing to help even if they say no at first. It’s like their duty to tell you no and then they can usually figure out a compromise. 😉

Well, when it comes to learning French, you are much further ahead than I am! I also tend to have piles of stuff around my house and I hate when people move things around and try to organize and I can’t find what I need! At work, it’s a different story. I tend to be way more organized and efficient at work. And, I also think going to bed early isn’t a bad thing. I’m a night owl and need to practice going to bed at a decent hour.
Diane says
That’s interesting that the work “you” is neat and organized but you have piles at home in your personal life. My offices were always messy too!
Jo-Anne says
Me and meal plans don’t mix, I can take no for an answer I just have trouble saying no, I am a big softy
Diane says
Aww being a softy can be good. 😉

I can sympathise with staying up late part. I never used to be, but since I moved, my hours have changed somewhat and it’s actually beneficial for me to stay up late. So my bed time’s gone from around 10:30pm to gone midnight, sometimes 1am! Tough to make the adjustment. Though yes, like you, I’ll still end up falling asleep watching a TV show/film after 10pm even if I am really into it.
Diane says
Staying up late for me is so hard. If I’m out somewhere and we’re actively doing things like walking around a Christmas market or at a concert, it’s not a problem (although I still get tired) but if I’m just home watching TV, I’ll always be passed out at like 10pm haha
Joy @MyTravelingJoys says
Hi Diane! I never really meal plan either. Depending what’s seasonal at the market or on sale, that’s what I buy. Add a side of quinoa, rice or potatoes and that’s it. My go-to meal lately for me and hubby has been rice bowls, so cook up a protein and veggies separately. Then create your own rice bowl at dinner. This week I did a Mediterranean style with garlic-yogurt chicken and a tahini sauce. Hope my advice helps! 🙂
I also collect lots of odd bits of paper…receipts, ticket stubs, trip schedules. I recently set a lot of it aside in a large shopping bag. Someday I’ll even sort it out or throw it all away!
Diane says
Thanks Joy, I love rice bowls and made a Mexican-inspired one last week. Thank you for reminding me how good they are. I will have to look up some new recipes. I like doing it with quinoa too. I made one with veggies, chicken and soy sauce a few months back and it was great. I’d better get in the kitchen!
