Salut, tout le monde! Let’s have some Friday fun with this light unpopular opinions post. I’ve made a list of popular things everyone else likes that I hate. Maybe you’ve seen the game going around on Facebook. So you know the types of overrated things I mean, things that people rave about and are super popular but you can’t stand at all. I’ll share mine (plus 2 French lifestyle ones at the end) and I hope you’ll play along in the comments! 😉
Unpopular opinions: Popular things I don’t like that everyone else does
Ok, let’s get into it.
1. Staying up all night (or late)
Ever since I was young, I’ve hated staying up late and was always the one who went to bed early at sleepovers. I am a morning person through and through and it’s not physically possible for me to wake up in the morning past 8 a.m. at the very latest. After dinnertime, I’ve never been able to get anything useful done and my brain functions best earlier in the day. In college, I never pulled an all-nighter and going out to crazy parties and clubs until dawn was never my thing. I have no shame in the fact that I go to bed early.
2. Country music
It’s just not a genre I vibe to at all although I can appreciate the musicianship and the catchiness of a good song. That said, I love all live music so I’d absolutely go to a country music concert and have a great time.
3. Beer
I’m a wine gal all the way. Specifically, dry whites are my favorite like Muscadet or Sauvignon Blanc.
4. Getting dressed up
The thought of having to put on evening wear and heels or something fancy for an event makes me want to run and hide. Having to get your hair done, fancy makeup. Just not my thing. Once in a while, sure, but it’s exhausting to think about.
5. Game of Thrones
The show is SO popular but I never got into it and don’t like the fantasy genre, period pieces, or historical shows.
6. Nutella
Although Nutella isn’t French (it’s Italian), it’s so popular in France and is sold in huge tubs at the grocery store. French people will spread it on bread for breakfast and it’s as popular here as peanut butter is in the USA. But I gag when I do as much as even smell it. That hazelnut taste is not my thing at all. Hazelnut cookies, candy, pastries…. you name it, if it’s praline/hazelnut, I steer clear. I had Nutella once years ago and never again. I just can’t get past that flavor.
7. La bise
I wrote a post on why I don’t really care for French cheek kisses along with a YouTube video as well. It doesn’t come naturally, is too close for comfort and I find it tedious!

New here and want to know more about me? Check out this 71 Questions post from last year where I answered all kinds of personal questions.
Have you seen my latest YouTube video on what things cost at a French farmers’ market?
Last thing, blogger pal Kirsten of Sand in My Curls interviewed me for her expat feature. I talk about the cost of living, what I miss most from the USA, my favorite parts of the French way of life, top advice for people looking to move, and more. I hope you’ll give it a read!

Nice post! You’re not alone on any of those. I feel the same way about six out of seven of them (I do like country music). We all gotta march to the beat of our drum!

I’m with you on beer (can’t even stand the smell), Nutella (okay but overrated IMO), Game of Thrones (too much strategy for me), la bise (once you lose the habit it just feels weird!) and probably getting dressed up. Okay, so we have a lot in common 😀
As for me, I’m not a big fan of series in general, Marvel and comics, team sports and most North American “treats” like PB, cupcakes and sheet cake.
Diane says
Sheet cake is my favorite. Forgot about it until just now and I think I may have to make some 🙂
Aussie Jo says
I like country music, and dressing nice.

I really enjoyed reading your list. I feel the same as you do except for dressing up. I do love dresses but with that being said Sauvignon Blanc, early to bed and with the current state of things la bise will be a thing of the past. I think we can relax!
Diane says
Oh I absolutely love dresses over pants any day but just not taking three hours to get ready for a glam eveningwear type of situation. 🙂 yes so glad the cheek kisses will be a thing of the past!
Kameela says
I’m with you on most of those except les bises. I just.love that amongst friends someone you don’t know kisses you because you’re there with his or her friends
QiaJenae Hamilton says
Agree completely, except I do like historical drama, not fantasy. My wines are berries, blackberry, blueberry, some mango, dandelion, which I prefer from my fav Iowa winery, Ackerman. http://www.ackermanwinery.com .
Thanks for another fab blog, Diane!
Peace!

I couldn’t agree more on Game of Thrones – don’t get that obsession at all. I don’t mind Nutella but it’s too sweet for me – the homemade version is much nicer!
