Hi guys! As you know from my post earlier in the week, we were up in the Brittany town of Lorient for the Volvo Ocean Race last weekend. In addition to visiting the race village and taking part in all the festivities for the race, we made sure to check out the area’s beaches, grocery stores and more. This is a pic heavy post, so enjoy!
So here’s the rest of our weekend. Go!
Happy Friday! I usually don’t post on Friday or over the weekend, but from time to time you may see a third weekly post. So here it is. 😉
First up, I have to share my supermarket finds with you from our weekend in Lorient. It always pays to browse the specialty foods aisle of the supermarkets when you’re out of town. You might just find all of this!! I couldn’t contain my excitement when I saw Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups — and at a reasonable (ish) price!! They also had Cape Cod potato chips, Kraft Macaroni & Cheese (3.80 euros/box), salad dressings, pancake mix and syrup and other stuff I’ve never seen near where I live. So that was a very nice surprise.
I also found some rillettes de saumon for Tom who loves that stuff. I found them in a specialty area for Brittany products and they came from the nearby island of Groix. If you’re traveling around France, be sure to browse the aisles when you go grocery shopping.
Sticking with the food theme, we also went to the weekend marché in the center of Lorient. My favorite score? Cherries. Lots and lots of beautiful cherries… I made sure to stock up. We also got local strawberries, honey and more.
We then took advantage of the beautiful weather and took Dagny down to the water’s edge in a more remote area near Larmor Plage on Saturday so she could run around a bit and sniff everything. It’s beach season here so dogs aren’t allowed on the regular beaches. We managed to find a somewhat secluded area with all kinds of fun things to smell. She rolled in an oyster, played with a family of mussels and loved jumping in the water in between the rocks. Here she is chilling out:
No weekend in Lorient is complete without visiting the coast. I just love the seaside in Brittany. Rocky, rugged and clean. Even my iPhone camera picked up the gorgeous water here. Crystal clear:
Sunday afternoon was when the Volvo Ocean Race in-port race took place, so we found a spot on the rocks in Larmor Plage to watch the action. We were a little too far away to catch what was going on but still had a great time just taking it all in. Team Alvimedica won. Here’s the view from our spot on the rocks.
And to wrap it up, some boats hanging out just offshore.

I love the photo of all the boats in the water…it just feels like summer. My father in law recently bought a second home in Brittany so I visited once. It feels really different from the rest of France and I could really feel the Celtic influence. We walked along the pink granite coast in Perros Guirec, which was incredible, and ate lots of Kouign amann, which is one of my favourite cakes of all time. I can really see why you love Brittany so much. It’s a bit far from where we are but I really hope we get to go back soon!

Oh wow, so fun! Yes, Brittany has its own charm and character that does feel different than other areas of France. So glad you got to visit! Maybe you’ll be back this summer?

Beautiful pictures ! I have never been to Brittany, now I know what I’ve been missing…

Thank you! If you ever get the opportunity to head out there, do it. Even if it’s just for an a day. Well worth the trip!

Hi !!! I used to go every year in Lorient, as my grand-parents lived there. I was born in Hennebont (but raised in Paris) which is at 10 kms from Lorient. I don’t know if you have visited yet Hennebont but believe me it is a great town too.

Very cool, such a nice area! I’m not sure I’ve ever been to Hennebont but I will have to check it out next time I’m in Brittany. Thanks for the recommendation. There are so many nice towns to discover!
