Nothing beats the refreshed feeling you get after a well-deserved vacation, and right now, we’re basking in post-vacation bliss. Have I unpacked my suitcase yet? No, of course not. So what did we do on our Brittany, France vacation?
Read on!
Our week en Bretagne was full of good food, fun and fantastic scenery that you may have caught here in our pics of the day. So what is this fun I speak of?
Char a voile
While I’m not exactly an adventure junkie per se, I do love a good adrenaline rush every now and then. Tom wanted to do char a voile, which I think is called sand yachting in English. It seemed like a fun thing to do, so I said why not, and we were off. The rain stopped just in time, so we got suited up and approached the sand. The wind whipped around us as we were instructed on how this was going to work. Each “cart” had a mast the size of a mini sailboat’s complete with a colorful sail. Underneath, there was a little cart that you lay back in and from there, you maneuver the front wheel with foot pedals. The sail was attached to a pulley with rope and that’s how you control your speed.
How hard could this be? I was ready! Sure, I listened to our instructor Aurelien explain how this was going to work and figured I was ready to let it rip. And that I did… a little too much. After my first few times around, I tugged hard on the rope tightening the sail which sent me flying. I was having a grand old time, but Aurelien flagged me down to inform me that the goal was NOT to get off the ground (majorly dangerous) and that today was just a learning session. Oops. I took it easy from there on out, and aside from the occasional sand gusts that temporarily blinded you, it was a great time!
Dagny loves the beach
Dagny has a special bond with Tom and me and we love her more than I can even articulate. If you have a dog, you know what this bond is all about. We made sure our vacation would be dog-friendly with lots of great outdoor areas for her to enjoy and even managed to eat out at three restaurants with Dagny sitting under the table without a peep — much to our surprise. We also wanted to take her to the beach. This was the first time Dagny saw the ocean and at first, all she wanted to do was play in the sand, not even noticing the giant ocean of a bathtub right in front of her. She toyed with little pieces of seaweed, mussels and just loved the feeling of the sand under her paws. As we approached the ocean, which was freezing might I add, Dagny ran down to the water’s edge to see what the fuss was all about. A small wave caught her by surprise and as the water rolled back down the sand, she looked at us as if to say “What the heck was that?” After her first wave, she stayed just out of reach of the water’s edge and focused on finding some crabs to go dig up instead. She absolutely loved the beach! Here’s a short video of her getting her feet wet: Dagny at beach
Brittany France karting
Before this trip, I’d never gone karting, but I escaped unscathed and highly recommend it. Tom has a love for karting and scoped out a karting place near St. Malo which had an outdoor track. One afternoon when the rain stopped, we took the opportunity to race each other. We were the only two on the track and Tom, being the nice husband he is, let me think I was winning the first few laps — but then he kicked it up a notch and left me in the dust. Yes, I drove like a grandma but that didn’t take away from the fun. Racing around a track in a little kart lets you get out your road rage in a safe way and drive like a psycho without the possibility of a ticket. Pass on the right? Sure. Curse out your husband? Check. Turn so your tires squeal? Absolutely.
We rented a boat
In Dinan, France, we rented a little motorboat on La Rance river and we weren’t sure how Dagny would react. Would she be scared of the noise? Want to run around? Well, two minutes in, our fears were put to rest because our trooper of a dog fell asleep in my lap and snored almost louder than the boat’s motor. She loved just cruising the river and taking everything in from the comfort of my lap. We saw ducks, a nutria (had to look this up after I translated from French. Tom says it was a ragondin), a few colorful birds and gorgeous scenery. What did Dagny think? She was too busy sleeping to notice. There’s something to be said for seeing a place from the water and this was one of the highlights of our trip.
Hope you enjoyed hearing about our trip to Brittany France!
Love that she had such a great time. Our two are the same. They are game for anything.
