Sheertex review: Honest thoughts on if the “world’s toughest tights” are worth it

If you’re anything like me, your go-to cold weather outfit includes tights and you can’t resist putting them on with a nice pair of boots and a skirt. But if you’re also like me, you go through way too many pairs of tights each season, snagging them on your nails, putting your fingers through them, or destroying them after a run-in with your dog’s paws. Enter my Sheertex tights review.

Whether you wear stockings and tights for work or play, I want to introduce you to a brand my wardrobe can’t live without — Sheertex. They’re a brand of hosiery I discovered last year that makes truly run-proof tights. Sheertex tights are a wardrobe staple no matter where you live and what size you are. How are Sheertex stockings better than the rest? Read on for my Sheertex review and find out if this hosiery brand is worth it. (Spoiler alert: YES!!!!)

Sheertex review: Why I love these indestructible tights

I’ve always loved wearing skirts and dresses, but in the winter, you have to cover your legs in most climates, with tights at the very least. While tights look great, I always hated having to be extra careful in them to avoid getting runs.

From putting them on gently to making sure no dogs jumped up on me to snagging them on a sharp toenail, wearing tights always takes a bit of heightened attention so you don’t end up with runs after one wear. Being that careful kind of takes the fun out of a cool outfit. And don’t even get me started on having to hand wash them.

Then Sheertex came on the scene. All that “go gentle” nonsense is now a thing of the past for me and I couldn’t be happier about it.

When I first heard about Sheertex, I thought they were too good to be true. Indestructible tights? Billed as “the world’s toughest tights?” Yeah right, I thought. But then I kept reading what the brand was all about and I was intrigued enough to buy a pair. Since that first pair, I’ve picked up several more and they are WORTH. IT. Zero regrets.

Do Sheertex tights really not get runs and would they last all season and beyond? Yes and yes.

I loved the fact that I wouldn’t have to keep replacing pairs of tights and stockings after only one or two wears. The cost adds up and it’s so wasteful to keep throwing them away after barely getting a couple of uses out of them. So sustainability speaking, that in and of itself is a plus. You buy fewer pairs of tights because you don’t have to keep replacing them. Buying as sustainably as possible has become increasingly important to me in recent years.

I also loved that many of the styles came in black — lucky it’s my favorite color to wear. The French overall are more muted when it comes to color palettes, so I knew wearing black tights would be perfect for my French winter fashion looks. It goes with everything.

What is Sheertex?

But before we get to the Sheertex tights review, let me tell you about the brand. 

Sheertex is a Canadian brand out of Montreal that originally launched on Kickstarter in 2017. Their claim to fame is having indestructible tights made from a propriety blend of fibers that make them virtually unbreakable. Founder Katherine Homuth writes, “[Our tights are] made out of the same polymers used in books or bulletproof vests or climbing equipment, fibers that had never actually before been used in apparel.”

I also love that they offer a great range of sizes, up to 3XL and maternity tights, making Sheertex a great choice for bodies of all sizes. They have regular tights, stockings, as well as thigh highs, socks and other accessories.

The styles range from classic, to shaping, to high waist, to footless and capri. The patterns include back seams, dots, some bright colors and even sparkle ones that I just picked up. 

UPDATE: The sparkle tights are AMAZING!! My new favorite pair. They feel long enough with very little pulling needed and they go on like a dream. They have a reinforced toe and a high waist that hits about an inch above my belly button, making them slimming and comfy. Plus the sparkles are so fun! They get a 10/10 from me.

Sheertex hosiery is also machine washable and ethically made in Canada. They also have a  90-day guarantee so I figured I had nothing to lose by trying. If anything you do makes your tights unwearable, Sheertex replaces them.

They also upcycle their extra material left over from the production process into the Second Chances Collection and make things like scrunchies, headbands, and more.

OK, let’s get into the Sheertex review part of my post where I tell you if they’re worth the price and live up to the hype.

My first impression of Sheertex tights

Sheertex reviews need to kick off with first impressions of the product, so let’s do it. I bought my first pair over a year ago and chose the Shaping Luxury Semi-Sheer Tights. I’ve since added to my collection and now have the Classic Sheer Tights, and several others as well.

Let me note they all feel and wear like “normal” tights. Just because Sheertex tights are super durable doesn’t mean they feel stiff once you put them on or weird in any way. They are 100% like regular tights, maybe some are on the more slick side before you put them on, but all feel like normal hosiery.

Something to note is that the tights are classified into different “deniers.” Sheertex explains, “Denier measures the thickness of fabric fibers. As denier count goes up, so do opacity and strength, and vice versa.”

The luxury shaping are 50 and the classic sheer are 30. 15 would be super sheer, so you’ll see tattoos, etc.

Sheertex Luxury Shaping Semi-Sheer Tights review

I went with his pair first because I like my tights to be a bit compressive and was replacing another brand I had just put in the trash. I also like my hosiery to go up to my bellybutton or more if they’re shaping tights. I’ve had weird issues with my stomach cramping from tights that bind right at my waist.

Also, higher rise styles don’t leave that dreaded line at the waist that can be seen in a tight dress. I wanted to make sure the line was smooth no matter what I wore. The waist band is nice and wide, comfortable but with a control top.

First impression:

Right out of the package, I felt they had a decent weight to them, definitely not thin or cheap feeling. The material was on the stiffer/slicker side and the waistband was smooth and substantial.

The color is nearly opaque so you won’t be seeing much skin peeking through.

I started putting them on and went pretty gently on them my first go-round — not wanting to put my finger through $79 tights. I  treated them like every other pair of tights I’ve ever worn, only to get them up to my thighs. Oops. Standing there like an idiot with tights around my thighs, I hopped over to the package on my dresser to check the size, thinking maybe I got a petite version by accident.

I indeed bought a medium, which is my size, and soon after realized I went way too easy on them. On the way up, I didn’t choke up on the tights enough, starting at the foot, which is often necessary for shaping tights that are a little more compressive. I figured I’d have to get a little more aggressive and work the fabric a little more.

Remember, you do not need to treat these tights gingerly in the least, a lesson I learned after a few minutes but was scared to ruin them. Not possible. Once I pulled on them, they went up without a hitch. The high waistband a bit higher than my belly button is super comfortable and doesn’t bind at all.

In terms of how much skin you see, well it’s not much. I’m quite pale and at 50 denier, these are dark and definitely more on the opaque side.

First-timer tip: Yank ’em up HARD! And start at the foot so you thin out the material as you go, just like regular stockings — but don’t be afraid to pull.

Sheertex Classic Sheer Tights review

First impression:

Right out of the package, they felt great to the touch. The material is a little softer and stretchier than the Shaping Luxury Semi-Sheer Tights, by comparison. You can feel they are a bit thinner as well, which makes sense nice they are a 30 denier and less opaque.

The Classic Sheer Tights were a breeze to put on — only took one try! — and were nice and stretchy. They were easier to pull up to my waist than the luxury shaping. Not much pulling needed at all.

These hit right at my belly button and the waist band is thick, stays up and most importantly doesn’t cut or bind. But they aren’t super high waist.

You’ll see your skin through these a little bit more than my first pair, but still have good coverage.

How much do Sheertex tights cost?

Sheertex hosiery is on the more expensive side with most pairs over $59/each. Mine above were on sale for $79 (but the Classic Sheer Tights are actually on sale for $49 at the time of writing this, so keep an eye out for sales).

As I’ve pointed out, these bad boys are ridiculously durable. If you wear stockings and tights frequently, it’s a no brainer to get a pair that is super high quality and will still be around for seasons to come.

Before discovering Sheertex, I’d buy less expensive tights $10+ a pair and that’s for the standard colors. Add in a back seam or dots and regular tights might be $15 or even $20 and beyond for a pair at a department store. I’d wear them three times max and either put my nail through them getting them on, catch them on a grommet on my boot or rub up against something, and they’d end up in the trash before the season was even over.

P.S. Sheertex also has an essential sheer style priced at $29, but I can’t speak to their quality since I haven’t personally tried those and they aren’t covered in my Sheertex review.

Are Sheertex tights really indestructible and run proof?

Sheertex tights are the most durable, life-proof ones I’ve come across and they are incredibly strong and will not run or rip. Now if you come at them with scissors, you can of course cut them so don’t do anything that crazy, but regular wear and tear won’t faze them.

One of the aspects that make them an even better buy is that the proprietary Sheertex material “heals” itself if you do snag them on something. This is probably the best part of my Sheertex review here! Yes, you read that right. 

For any little snag or imperfection, you kind of pull the fabric in opposite directions and snap it a few times, and voilà! It’s as good as new. Sorcery, I tell ya!

While the tights won’t run, they can snag as I said and you may see a thin snag line especially after the first wash. I find it more prevalent with the thinner styles. Sheertex explains how to fix this and it’s not just a cosmetic fix, like using glue or nail polish. It actually repairs the fabric as I just explained.

As their FAQ explains, “All you need to do is pinch on either side of the line with both hands at once, and tug sharply a few times, maybe wiggling on some of the more stubborn ones. We will even give our tights a nice hand wash to allow the fibres to reset; repeating the massage method if needed. Don’t be afraid to really pull at the line, it should almost make a snapping sound. Our tights can take it!”

The only Sheertex nemesis I’ve come across is Velcro. If you have a coat or shoes with Velcro, try to keep your tights away at all costs. While a few small snags can be worked out via the method above, heavy duty Velcro may be a problem for the Sheertx material.

But in terms of runs or yanking on them or putting your fingers through them, they are indestructible — shockingly so.

Note: The snags are more visible on the sheer end of the spectrum as I said. Over time if you’re rough with them and want to avoid that, go with a more opaque pair. Snags can be massaged out in many cases but in general they are more visible on the black sheer pairs. What they won’t do though is run, so that’s a win.

Will Sheertex tights last forever?

Forever is a long time, so no, probably not. Sheertex tights are still articles of clothing, after all, and they are prone to wear over time. But I can tell you I’ve never had a pair of regular non-Sheertex tights last me more than one season (unless I wear them once per season). With normal wear and care, Sheertex tights will last you many seasons.

Sheertex sizing

Let’s talk about the Sheertex size guide. Do Sheertex tights run true to size? Yes!

The material is super stretchy and the size guide goes by weight, not height. They offer XS up to 3XL and even have a maternity line making the brand pretty size inclusive. They no longer offer specific tall sizing and Sheertex stands by their size guide based on weight.

For Sheertex sizing questions, it’s always best to email them in advance if you’re deciding between two sizes. If you’re right at the weight range cutoff between two sizes, I’d recommend sizing up — especially if you’re on the taller side.

Although Sheertex says the best method is to hand wash them, machine washing has been fine for me.

—Not cheap. Most varieties of Sheertex tights run upwards of $79 so they aren’t cheap. —Limited info on the stocking material itself. I know the exact composition of the tights is proprietary but it raises questions surrounding how environmentally friendly they really are.

—Return policy. For hygiene reasons, Sheertex doesn’t allow returns if you change your mind. They do have a 90-day guarantee which I listed as a pro if something happens to make them unwearable. But if you have buyer’s remorse, all sales are final. You can’t get a refund just because they don’t fit.
